Product Description Matthew Kelly's book Rediscovering Catholicism addresses questions we face today as individuals and as members of the church asking us to reflect on how we are living our lives and how we might live them differently.
Kelly says "This is not strictly speaking a theological work or defense of Catholicism but is my reflection on my experience as a Catholic". Questions addressed in the book include "Do you think you find happiness where you are searching? Is Jesus relevant today? Kelly then goes on to explain how he feels the Catholic Church holds the truth we are all seeking. Readers have expressed the opinion that this book is not just for fallen away Catholics as the title might imply but for any Catholic who is looking for a way to make their lives more meaningful within the Catholic faith.
Rediscovering Catholicism has pages where Kelly discusses many questions Catholics are asking today as they try to live their lives within the Catholic Church in a changing culture. Rediscovering Catholicism Matthew Kelly Pages. Product Videos. Where do you go with people once they have finished RCIA? I attend a small TLM parish and this is where I see a real failing. Prior to this parish, I tried several Novus Ordo parishes to find only one advanced Catholic training in a Bible study and it was heretical.
Thankfully we have breakfast and lunch after Sunday Masses but these are for community building, not catechizing. Perhaps this is what Vatican II was really trying to give us. This material is not meant as substance for us who are already engaged and need something more, but it can help us reach out to our brothers and sisters who are struggling to stay Catholic.
Your salvation depends upon believing and living the Truth. So you credit Matthew Kelly with helping you come to your Catholic faith but then spend an entire blog post in criticism or at least questioning his approach? I am a fan and supporter of Dynamic Catholic. I think the work they are doing is trying to put people back onto a path to the beauty and truth of the Catholic faith.
It is a starting place. There are plenty of other wonderful resources to go deep in the faith once you are interested in doing so. Like it or not, we will not win people back to Catholicism by starting the conversation with talk of heaven and hell and the most controversial social issues of our day. Meet people where they are and draw them closer.
Rick, I never said that Matthew Kelly was responsible for me coming to my faith. While Matthew Kelly lent a hand for a little while in the beginning stages of my faith, I soon realized that he was incorrect in what he had to peddle. How come he keeps writing the same book and giving the same talk year after year? How come many are following in his footsteps and regurgitating the same message? If Matthew Kelly was used at Christmas and Easter one year and then we never heard about him again, that would be one thing, but Matthew Kelly is played over and over again.
When the Rediscover movement came to the Archdiocese of Minneapolis and St. Paul, I thought it would be good. If it was good enough for Jesus, then it is good enough for me. Traditional Roman Catholic Thoughts. Rediscover Catholiciam is an intro or re-intro level book. I read it, saw and heard him speak, and our parish did a book study of RC, which is a compilation of several of his talks.
We modified the study guide quite extensively to deepen the impact as we had people at various rungs of the ladder of faith, but the book was was ok for its purpose — attracting people to a point of trust and curiosity about becoming an intentional disciple of Jesus in the Church.
The story was even more powerful when pointing out that further, the Son, unlike the son in that story, volunteered. People wanted to deepen their faith after the book program but our parish was not prepared with Bible or Catechism studies. We did a follow up meeting one year later, and people said it changed them—they were praying more, attending mass more, going deeper into the faith, than before reading the book.
They were hungry for solid food now that they had advanced beyond the milk stage. If there is no where to go or no parish support after reading the book or seeing the videos, they will end up becoming the seeds upon rocky ground. An evangelist is not a preacher, exhorter, teacher, etc. That is where every one in these comments comes in: use your energy to Cultivate the seeds that have been planted by books such as RC, grow the souls.
Help people encounter Jesus on the cross and through the sacraments rather condemn them. Bring them to the next level or all the way to sainthood, wherever your graces are given to you.
I have never cared for Matthew Kelley. He has the fervor of a Protestant evangelist. His philosophy seems man centered and awash in Modernism. Unfortunately my Parish and diocese is all about Modernism. We need to get back to the Traditions that made the Church strong. In the last 50 years, this new way has been an assault on the Mass.
Why people defend this is mind boggling. His work is drenched in sentimentalism and any religious endevour that uses sentimentalism and emotions to convey anything is a man centered, narcissistic enterprise. They also many times complain, why were they never taught these truths. Protestant inspired evangelizing will never work. Michele Bondi Bottesi June 8, at am. James K Savonarola June 8, at am. They, too, were sinners but became the best versions of themselves through prayer and through allowing God to work through them. Rediscover Catholicism forced me to think deeper about the things I have always been taught growing up in a Catholic church, home, and school. It inspired me to continue to re-learn Catholicism and to understand what it takes to be a Catholic and to be the best version of myself. It renewed my appreciation for the Catholic faith and reminded me that I love being Catholic, and I love being a follower of Christ.
Whether you are a practicing catholic, a non-practicing catholic, or somewhere in between, read this book. Read it and discover more about what it means to be a Catholic.

That's when the President of France makes an announcement that shocks Europe: He is closing the French borders. No one can enter the country, and that's why that night you're watching a little bit of CNN before going to bed. Your jaw hits your chest when a weeping woman's words are translated into English from a French news program: There's a man lying in a hospital in Paris dying of the mystery flu.
It has come to Europe. Panic strikes. As best they can tell, after contracting the disease, you have it for a week before you even know it, then you have four days of unbelievable symptoms, and then you die. The British close their borders, but it's too late. The disease breaks out in Southampton, Liverpool, and London, and on Tuesday morning the President of the United States makes the following announcement: "Due to a national security risk, all flights to and from the United States have been canceled.
If your loved ones are overseas, I'm sorry. They cannot come home until we find a cure for this horrific disease. Within four days, America is plunged into an unbelievable fear. People are wondering, What if it comes to this country? Preachers on television are saying it's the scourge of God. Then on Tuesday night you are at church for Bible study, when somebody runs in from the parking lot and yells, "Turn on a radio!
It has come to America. Within hours the disease envelops the country. People are working around the clock, trying to find an antidote, but nothing is working. It's as though it's just sweeping in from the borders. Then suddenly the news comes out: The code has been broken. A cure has been found. A vaccine can be made. But it's going to take the blood of somebody who hasn't been infected.
So you and I are asked to do just one thing: Go to the nearest hospital and have our blood tested. When we hear the sirens go off in our neighborhood, we are to make our way quickly, quietly, and safely to the hospital. Sure enough, by the time you and your family get to the hospital it's late Friday night. There are long lines of people and a constant rush of doctors and nurses taking blood and putting labels on it. Finally, it is your turn. You go first, then your spouse and children follow, and once the doctors have taken your blood they say to you, "Wait here in the parking lot for your name to be called.
Wondering quietly to yourself, What on earth is going on here? Is this the end of the world? How did it ever come to this? Nobody seems to have had their name called; the doctors just keep taking people's blood. But then suddenly a young man comes running out of the hospital, screaming. He's yelling a name and waving a clipboard. You don't hear him at first. The young man screams the name again as he and a team of medical staff run in your direction, but again you cannot hear him.
But then your son tugs on your jacket and says, "Daddy, that's me. That's my name they're calling. Hold on! We just need to check one more time to make sure he doesn't have the disease. Five tense minutes later, out come the doctors and nurses, crying and hugging each another; some of them are even laughing. It's the first time you have seen anybody laugh in a week. An old doctor walks up to you and your spouse and says, "Thank you.
Your son's blood is perfect. It's clean, it's pure, he doesn't have the disease, and we can use it to make the vaccine. As the news begins to spread across the parking lot, people scream and pray and laugh and cry. You can hear the crowd erupting in the background as the gray-haired doctor pulls you and your spouse aside to say, "I need to talk to you. We didn't realize that the donor would be a minor and we.
The doctor presents the form and you quickly begin to sign it, but then your eye catches something. The box for the number of pints of blood to be taken is empty. That is when the old doctor's smile fades, and he says, "We had no idea it would be a child. We weren't prepared for that.
You ask him again, "How many pints? The doctor grabs you by the shoulders, pulls you close, looks you straight in the eyes, and says, "We are talking about the whole world here.
Do you understand? The whole world. Please, sign the form. We need to hurry! I have spent hundreds of hours reflecting on where we are in our journey as a Church, and one thing that has become startlingly clear is that we have forgotten our story. In numb silence you sign the form because you know it's the only thing to do.
Then the doctor says to you, "Would you like to have a moment with your son before we get started? Could you walk into that hospital room where your son sits on a table saying, "Daddy? What's going on? And when the doctors and nurses come back in and say, "I'm sorry, we've got to get started now; people all over the world are dying," could you leave? Could you walk out while your son is crying out to you, "Mom? Where are you going? Why are you leaving? Why have you abandoned me? The following week, they hold a ceremony to honor your son for his phenomenal contribution to humanity … but some people sleep through it, others don't even bother to come because they have better things to do, and some people come with a pretentious smile and pretend to care, while others sit around and say, "This is boring!
I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not, but the amazing life you have, my son died so that you could have that life.
