Why does straight hair go curly

View all post by Amy Tribe Website. My hair has been straight my whole life. However in the past 5 or 6 years I have 2 places in the back of my head which have become curly! The areas are getting bigger. It almost looks like I have horns! I have never had chemo. I went through menopause 25 years ago. But my hair is both straight and curly, with a little bit of wave here and there. My dad is a red head and do am i and you can imagine his curls, but my mom has pencil straight hair.

I get weird looks all the time because of my hair and it makes me really insecure. Your email address will not be published. Amy Tribe August 13, Hair Styling. Curly Hair. Straight Hair. Hair follicles are first formed in the first trimester of pregnancy. The shape is determined by your DNA. This shape is thought to be mostly fixed for life, however, genes can be turned on and off by your environment and experiences. Just as your skin sheds and new skin grows, the hair follicles are going through a similar rebirth all the time.

If any of the many genes associated with hair follicle shape is turned on or off, the hair follicle shape can change slightly or on rare occasions, a lot.

Genes can turn on and off for lots of different reasons. These factors are not even completely understood by scientists! But we do know that hormones can turn genes on and off. Hormones can have huge effects on the body, including the hair. People often see changes in their hair texture when they go through puberty, and hormones are probably one reason for this.

Women going through pregnancy often notice changes to both their skin and hair. Pregnancy hormones play a role in these changes, so may possibly play a role in straight hair suddenly turning curly. Another cause of changing hormones is menopause. Aging affects the hair follicles, but it is rarely a cause of curly hair. However, aging does make hair strands finer. Lighter hair will make wavy or curly hairs become more apparent.

My hair was always a little wavy, but it was crazy thick when I was a child and adolescent. So I would have some waves if I kept my hair short, but if I grew it out very much, there were no waves to be found. The same thing could happen with people who have thick hairs but curl producing hair follicles, especially women who have had long hair their whole lives.

As they age, the curls will become more curly and noticeable. Welcome to a week celebrating curly hair! Now you know why your hair is curly but what if your hair changes? For years I had long, straight hair. Maybe it was a little wavy, but never frizzy. Then one day it started to change. It took a long journey of trial and error to work out how to style my curls. I slowly fell in love with my curls and they are the reason I started Hair Romance.

Hormones, stress and ageing as seen as the common causes for changes to your hair texture and quality. One interesting fact about curly hair is that the gene for straight hair is recessive but that the curly hair gene is not completely dominant.

The most likely theory, in my opinion, is to do with your hormones. Hormones are a possible trigger for the curly hair gene.

As well as affecting the quality of your hair, hormones can change your muscle tone too. This includes your scalp. The change of muscle tone could affect the shape of your hair follicles and their direction of growth. Straight hair follicles grow straight out but curly hair follicles have a hook shape.

With my hair, puberty was the when my curls decided to appear and this fits with the hormone changes. For many women, pregnancy and birth have a significant impact on their hair too.

I sure wish we had more of an explanation for why this happened but I sure appreciate your article! Would be more helpful if it was my entire head then at least I could embrace them and work with them? I am a 66 yr old male. I had chemotherapy for 9 months from May and am remission since. Then my straight lustruous shiny silky black hair went completely dull , dry , and now the rest of the hair is following suit. Imagine my sparse grey hairs cud have looked so healthy and shiny if it was not for the dry coarse bushy hair i now have.

I really do not know what to do. Obviously i will now have my hormone levels checked and hopefully the issue can be addressed. When jolted by the chemo, the follicle changes temporarily but will eventually return to its regular shape. Muscular changes frequently occur during puberty, menopause and chemotherapy when medications and hormones alter the muscle tone of the hair follicle.

Sometimes the change in hair texture can be extreme. When the muscles change in the hair follicle, Torch believes the shape of the follicle changes and causes straight hair to become curly or vice versa.
