Why kung fu doesn work

It's easy to push martial arts in a totalitarian society, or a kind of government where you have a very strong class structure. Well, that doesn't go here in this country. People exercise more free will, more freedom of choice. The political structure we have in the free world and the whole sense of individualism is kind of counterproductive to the way the old schools of thought in the martial arts were disciplined and are instituted.

And I don't agree with the old way. It kills your self-esteem. It kills your sense of self. It kills your creativity, especially in children, and this is a major detriment to the person growing up and actualizing their total potential on all levels. A child needs to be taught how to trust its own mind. Once that child learns and understands how to trust himself, then he can start using that trust and power to trust in his immediate surroundings, such as his instructor or his parents.

In the real world people want to learn to fight for self defense. People want to know that if someone attacks them, they can take them down and run.

In the west, fighting or martial arts is seen as something you need to learn to take someone down. In the east it is seen as a lifestyle, an art, a way to meditate and for self defense.

These are the two views. The reason Kung Fu would not work in real life is because more than half of the things they are taught cannot be used if someone seriously attacks them. That is why most people go for boxing, kick boxing or judo. All the hands on martial arts that is meant for instant take down. The kung fu from ancient times when China was more militant Kung Fu was meant to kill. The old Kung Fu masters of China fought for real.

Everything was about survival so they had to train to kill. The modern Kung Fu that you see in movies and TV is just for show and compare to the old Kung Fu, it is an embarrassment. Also there are many fake styles of Kung Fu that do not work. The problem is that the real Kung Fu, you know, the Kung Fu design to kill and murder, is long gone.

There have been many martial arts styles that have been exposed in China. He has gone up against Wing Chun masters, Tai Chi masters and other styles. There is a reason why Xu Xioadong is so confident in facing these fake Kung Fu masters. As a trained MMA fighter, Xu understands combat. He understands the reality of fighting and what is necessary to take someone down. Everything is in the dojo. Pin Twitter Facebook. You may also like: My first Kung Fu training.

How to do sparring. Self-defense: brawl in front of a grocery store. Lesson 3 - Self-defense: mental preparation. Students must spend time striking and wrestling with other humans, getting hit and wrestled, and avoiding these things. And this training must be against completely uncooperative, fully resisting opponents. Cooperative training, no matter how hard, will not prepare a student for the chaos of a real attack.

Many training methods that look good on the surface are useless at best and counter productive at worse. Take a look at this very common "stick fighting" drill done in Filipino martial arts:. No one fights with sticks like this.

But it's just a training drill, right? The practitioners are getting accustomed to attacking and blocking, right?

Look a little closer, and notice that no one is following through on their strikes like a real attacker would. Thus, the blocks these students are learning to use would be ineffective against a real attacker swinging a stick hard and fast.

The positions they're learning to put their hands in will get their hands nailed by their opponent's sticks in reality. Not only is this drill useless, but it's teaching the practitioners to do things that will get them injured in a real stick fight.

The same can and will be seen in martial arts schools around the world. Isolated drilling of a technique is not only fine, but necessary.
